Hay Fever Injections
Hay fever symptoms can affect the quality of your life and the injectable treatment may help to relieve the symptoms.
At Dr. S. T. Medical and Aesthetics Clinic (Birmingham), we offer hay fever treatment as per symptom severity and patient suitability. Treatment options include oral antihistamine, nasal spray and hay fever injection as last option to provide symptom relief. This service is delivered following a clinical assessment to ensure it is safe and appropriate for you.
Important: Steroid injections for hay fever are not firstline and are offlabel in the UK. The NHS does not routinely recommend them as their guidelines have shown that potential risks do not justify the treatment benefits. We provide this option only when symptoms are severe and other therapies have been ineffective or not tolerated and the patients have been informed of and have carefully considered the risks associated with the injection.
Who this is for
You may be considered if you:
Have no health conditions where the injection is contraindicated or not safe to administer.
It does not cure hay fever and only temporarily suppresses the immune system providing symptom relief. Have severe hay fever impacting daily life or work despite optimal use of oral/nondrowsy antihistamines, intranasal steroid sprays, saline rinses, and antiallergy eye drops
What is the injection?
A single intramuscular corticosteroid injection (commonly triamcinolone acetonide 40 mg/mL) given into the gluteal muscle ( muscle of buttock)
Onset usually within 48–72 hours; benefit can last 4–8 weeks (sometimes up to 12 weeks)
Typically one injection per season; repeat doses are not routinely advised and, if considered, would only be after reassessment and with a minimum interval of 12 weeks
Potential Benefits
May provide rapid symptom relief from sneezing, nasal blockage, itching, watery eyes and sleep disturbance when other treatments fail
Removes the need for daily tablets/sprays during its effective period (though you can continue nonsteroidal measures)
Risks and side effects
All steroid medicines can cause side effects. We will discuss these in detail and provide written information before you consent.
Common/expected
Facial flushing, mood or sleep disturbance, increased appetite
Temporary elevated blood sugar and blood pressure
Injection site discomfort, bruising, or lipoatrophy (local fat thinning)
Less common but important
Lowered immunity, delayed wound healing, oral thrush or skin infections
Menstrual changes; fluid retention
Glaucoma or cataract progression in susceptible people
Rare but serious
Adrenal suppression (especially with repeated dosing)
Avascular necrosis of the hip
Severe infection, including sepsis
Anaphylaxis (serious allergic reaction)
Because of these risks, we limit use to clearly selected cases and avoid repeating within the same season whenever possible.
